The ABS Kindergarten fosters a whole child approach incorporating age-appropriate inquiry-based learning. As the first five years of a child’s life are the most formative, the KG curriculum endeavours to reinforce emerging skills in all domains, physical, socio-emotional and cognitive, offering a stimulating balance between learning and play. We build towards a strong academic foundation through an inquiry-based approach to teaching and learning.
Children engage in a range of integrated units of study, which provide learning experiences that connect all the learning strands of the curriculum; Arabic and English languages, science, math, social studies, IT, music, drama and PE. Children are encouraged to collaborate and share within a positive classroom environment, where learning centres and students’ ideas are explored. There are three coeducational classes in KG 1 (ages 4-5) and three coeducational classes in KG 2 (ages 5-6). Each class has a team of two Arabic language and two English language teachers. The children spend half of their time delving into the Arabic Programme and the other half in the English Programme. In addition to the teachers there are four helpers who assist the children with tasks outside the classroom. The purpose-built KG Media Centre, with its Fairytale décor has a wonderful selection of children’s books in both languages. We encourage our students to borrow books and develop a lifelong love of reading. |

| The ICT Programme in the KG introduces the children to the use of technology as a learning tool. Basic computer skills are taught, developed and integrated within the curriculum in our well-equipped computer lab. Each classroom and the Media Centre have an interactive whiteboard. There are also three additional computers in each classroom, where subject-based programs supporting class studies are used by the children on a daily basis.
Music in the KG is taught by a specialist. Students are given the opportunity to experiment with a variety of musical instruments. Rhythm, rhyme and a love for music is instilled during the music lessons that are accompanied by the piano or keyboard. Physical Education in the KG is taught by specialists. Gross motor skills are developed through track and field, ball skills, gymnastics and dance. Each class is accompanied by their teachers to the Sports Complex once a week for 45 minutes. Through dance, singing, drama and art children learn about national, international and traditional Islamic and Christian celebrations. Some of these become performances in the school theatre for everyone’s pleasure. The KG has an indoor play area complete with climbing frame and imaginary dress-up/ home/kitchen centre. Outside there are sandboxes, and a large grassed playground, which has climbing frames, a pirate’s ship, slides, room for ball games and a traffic city. The KG Volunteer Mothers play an integral role in the children’s education. They take part in the KG special occasions, which includes Characters Alive!, the 100th Day Celebration, Roy G. Biv Week, the Pyjama Party and Family Fun Day just to name a few. |
