Current Level of Alert at ABS: 3 (Refer to Flu Policy below)

Message from the Principal (25th November 2009)

Dear Colleagues,

I am very happy to report that since my last H1N1 update at the end of last week we have not had any further confirmed cases reported to us.

The number of confirmed cases in the ABS community has reduced significantly during recent weeks and this seems to be a trend in other parts of the world. Whilst we do expect further cases in the ABS community and quite possibly an increase during the winter months we believe that most people are now aware that H1N1 is just flu and that normal flu precautions and treatment apply.

From 1st December we will stop requiring daily temperature checks of Kindergarten students although the class teachers will still be vigilant and will check a child’s temperature if they suspect the child has a raised temperature or feels unwell.

From today we are downgrading our pandemic status to level 3 (blue) in our pandemic plan and I will no longer be sending these regular H1N1 updates unless the situation significantly changes.

We would still like to remind parents that a child who is confirmed to have the H1N1 flu should spend a week away from school and that siblings remain away for at least 3 days. Parents should continue to report confirmed cases to us so that we can accurately monitor the situation. However, confirmed students and their siblings will no longer be required to produce a ‘clearance’ certificate from a medical practitioner when they return.

We would like to thank all members of the ABS community for their cooperation and understanding during the initial four months of concern about the H1N1 flu virus. We will continue providing hand-gels for the foreseeable future and we encourage students, staff and parents to continue frequent hand-washing and to use tissues when coughing or sneezing.

Happy Eid Al-Adha!

With best wishes

Message from the Director of Resources

-         Don’t panic! – for the majority of people who are diagnosed with A(H1N1) it is a mild illness
-         Watch your child for the following symptoms:

         High temperature (>38 degrees C)

         Cough

         Sore throat

         Runny or stuffy nose

         Body aches

         Headache

         Chills and fatigue

- If your child displays 2 or more of the above symptoms, DO NOT send them to school but keep them at home and contact your Doctor.

- Take precautionary measures to help prevent the spread of infection. Encourage children to (and model yourself):

  • Cover nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing – throw the tissue in the bin after use
  • Wash hands often with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing
  • Make use of alcohol-based hand-gels (these are being placed around the school)
