BEF, ABS Master plan and our future Vision

The Baccalaureate Endowment Fund (BEF) came about as an initiative aimed at raising funds to support the Amman Baccalaureate School in developing its programmes and facilities to meet the continuous challenges and demands of the educational system and to channel these funds into the areas which are most vital for its development and improvement.

 BEF History

BEF is a non-profit organisation. It was established in 1996 by a resolution of the Board of Trustees (BOT). It consists of a committee that is formed from: current parents, senior parents, PTA, Alumni, Board of Trustees, the Principal, the Financial Manager and the Fundraising Director of the school.

BEF is the engine driving the success behind ABS. It is the link between you, our donors and the ABS. BEF’s overall aim is to generate financial resources to support ABS in becoming the “Educational Institute of Choice” and to distinguish its graduates as the future pioneers of Jordan by focusing on academic excellence, social integrity, responsibility and obligations.

BEF facilitates students of high ability to enroll  irrespective of their financial backgrounds (Grade 9 scholarship programme), supports the Annual Students Rewards Programme and the Special Needs Department. It also contributes towards the upgrading the school’s ICT capabilities and the school buildings.

 BEF Objectives

To  make it easier for ABS to continue its successful development and enhance its services to the community and to education in Jordan.

 Where do BEF funds go?

  • Special Programmes to meet the specific needs of individual students.
  • Financial assistance to students - through scholarships, prizes for academic and extra curriculum achievements and bursaries.
  • Continued development and improvement of the libraries and ICT facilities for students.
  • Development of additional and specialised services and amenities.
  • Raising funds for training and development of teachers.
  • Development of a strong Alumni affiliation for future support to the school.
  • The Baccalaureate Endowment Fund (BEF) administers and manages several fundraising initiatives with students, parents, alumni (OBS), friends, foundations and corporations.
  • The funds raised by the BEF help the school develop its academic programs, student scholarships and awards, renovation projects and new facilities.

Capital Campaign

Development and Improvement Projects

The School recognises that since the construction of the original buildings in the 1980s, there have been significant developments in its programmes, including the implementation of Information & Communication Technology. There have also been changes in the needs and expectations of the community. As a result of these changes existing facilities no longer fully meet the needs of the school and its students.

Way to give

The school wishes to have sufficient funding needed to construct and complete the following projects:

1.    Construction of a new Kindergarten

The projected cost is estimated as: JD 1,640,000

The 2,000 m² indoor facility target Completion Date: August 2010

Currently the ABS KG is a self-contained unit, located on the lower floor of Building C. Since the original construction of the school the nature of the KG programme has undergone significant development and the existing facility has been adapted to accommodate these changes. The Board and administration recognize that further development of the existing KG facility is not practical and seeks to develop a new, self-contained KG facility to better provide the initial foundation of the ABS educational experience.

2.    Upgrading Technology

The projected cost is estimated as: JD 250,000

Target Completion Date: July 2010

The upgrading of Technology within the school will ensure that the latest digital technologies and learning and teaching are fully integrated. The aim is to ensure that technology supports and enhances and, on occasions, transforms student learning so that students are fully prepared for their ‘digital’ futures.

ICT Vision Statement

• To become the leading school in the region for integrating technology in all aspects of education and to ensure that ICT is at the centre of Learning and Teaching at ABS.

• To prepare students for an increasingly technology-driven world and to ensure that students are able to use technology critically, creatively, safely, ethically and in a responsible manner.

3.     Our Scholarships Programme

The purpose of offering Scholarships (and Exhibitions) is to attract high quality entrants to the school and to retain students of exceptional quality who may be attracted by similar scholarships at other institutions.

The purpose of Bursaries or financial assistance is to provide support for existing families, who are experiencing financial difficulties and who otherwise would be unable to meet the full cost of the fees.

The purpose of Academic Awards or Endowment Fund Awards is to recognize academic excellence, accomplishments in other fields and or exceptional commitment to the school.

 BEF Scholarships Fundraising Programme

·         One of the Goals of BEF is to cover 50% of the cost (tuition fees) of the scholarship scheme from the returns of the Endowment Fund.

·         Every year, the school offers up to 4 scholarships to grade 9 students which, dependent upon the progress of the student, may be continued until they complete grade 12.

·         BEF also aims to cover the cost of some financial assistance to students from grades 6 - 12.

4.    Renovating Design and Technology Workshops

The projected cost is estimated as: JD 250,000

Target Completion Date: July 2011

The project will enhance existing school workshops in order to meet the requirements of international standards in this subject. The new facilities will be spacious and well ventilated and lit and equipped with CNC machines and modern equipment and machinery.

5.    Renovating Laboratories

The school currently has eight dedicated science laboratories, five of which were not originally designed to accommodate teaching in this field. As science forms a major and increasingly important component of the programme the school considers the renovation and refurbishing of these laboratories to meet developments in modern science education as a priority. The upgraded Science laboratories will be well equipped, ergonomically friendly, with student work areas arranged in islands, well ventilated and lit.

6.    Construction of a new IB Diploma College

The projected cost is estimated as: JDs 2 million for furniture and equipment.

Target Completion Date: July 2013
